Denton Business Chronicle – September 2005 Editor’s Note Hearty helping
As many survivors of Hurricane Katrina scatter across 28 states to find temporary and, in some cases, permanent shelter after devastating losses, both they and their families are thankful for the help being offered by businesses and residents.
From clothing, water and food to help finding medicine, healthcare and even re-establishing identities, the outpouring of assistance has been tremendous.
From a family member’s perspective, knowing so many others care is uplifting and reaffirms the very essence of humanity. We are all one people coming together in a time of need.
Locally, many have collected cash and items to benefit those at Camp Copass and others with at least the temporary means to stay in local hotels. All together, officials estimate around 1,000 survivors are in Denton, with more in surrounding communities.
Andre Rheault, better known as Frenchy to most, the owner of Frenchy’s Lawn Service, jumped into the middle of the situation, offering to collect donations and items as have many others. Among the businesses offering assistance are TexasBank, Merrill Gardens, J&W Warehouse, Northstar Bank, DATCU, Kroger, Denton Record Chronicle, Quality Inn & Suites, Denton Chamber of Commerce, ActivMedical of Denton, Edward Jones, Lenny’s Sub Shop, Cookie Bouquet and Bliss Mobile Day Spa – to name but a few.
These business people offer their time, money and locations despite rising costs from higher gas prices and economy wobbling with the aftereffects of one of the worst disasters ever to hit the United States.
It is this determination and selfless giving that sets the standard of offering a helping hand back to daily life.
As these survivors begin to recover from the devastation, they will discover exactly what Denton has to offer and come to know some of the people who care enough to help them at a great time of need.
They will discover what many already know –Denton is much more than a shelter from the storm, a medical destination or the third city. It is home.

Health Fair Season in Full Swing
|
 |
| From left to right, James Garner, Jane Garner Hale, and Misty Koperski stand by their product table at the Primrose Health Fair on October 7, 2005 in Denton. |
ActivMedical has been active at health fairs this fall in Denton County.
Fall is an important time to check your health. With the flu and other illnesses and ailments more prevalent in the fall, now is the time to examine your health and prepare for the months ahead. ActivMedical has the best selection of items to keep you and your family happy and healthy, and even to help get you back to normal if you do have an injury or experience an ailment. Because of this, ActivMedical goes out in to the community to allow others to see their products.
At the health fairs, ActivMedical does more than just present a sampling of their wide array of items; they also perform valuable services for the health fair’s patrons. At the Primrose Health Fair on October 7, 2005, their Board Certified Pedorthist/ Board Certified Orthotist, James Garner, performed foot exams. “It’s important to keep a close eye on your feet – especially for diabetics. Even what a patient thinks of as a “little red spot” can turn in to a big problem without the proper care.”
Rehab Director, Misty Koperski also came out to do checks of blood pressure and pulse oximetry. Sales, Marketing and Community Relations Director, Jane Garner Hale was also there to showcase ActivMedical’s most popular products and introduce new ones, like the eight-and-a-half pound portable oxygen concentrator, the INOGEN. ActivMedical is the first company to carry the INOGEN in the Dallas/Ft.Worth area. “The machine is quite a hit.” Garner Hale, said. “Finally, oxygen patients don’t have to feel tethered. They can take this machine with them, plug it in their car’s cigarette adapter, a wall outlet, or let it run on its battery for 4 hours. The best part is, it makes its own oxygen, and there are no tanks to refill. It’s a true answered prayer for so many oxygen patients.”
Keep your eyes peeled for ActivMedical out in the community at health fairs and other events. Their table of products and services is the next best thing to touring their expansive store and is a definite “must see”.
